Chain Wrestling

In the early 80’s, two of the biggest stars in Pro Wrestling — Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine — faced off in a long, bloody feud.  Their hatred boiled over at Starrcade ’83 where they were chained together with leather dog collars around their necks, and a blood-bath ensued.   You’ve probably seen or heard about this famous match — one of the most brutal and entertaining chain matches ever.

This gallery features photos and (hot) descriptions from a wrestling magazine that covered their epic battle.  Let’s take a look at these captions and the true meanings if we read between the lines.

Do I have my head in the gutter, or is this language totally suggestive??  In the first three photos of this gallery alone, we already see a full load of sexual and homo-erotic references in the captions:  “explosive” (i.e. orgasmic); “suffering serious injury at the hands of the other,” (i.e., rough fondling); “Piper was in full control,” (i.e. sexually dominant); “still not satisfied,” (i.e. still horny); “He continued to tear into Valentine,” (i.e., raping and pillaging); “Skirt wearing Scottish sissy,” (i.e., transexual); “I’m his master,” (i.e., sexually dominant); “He cries every night knowing he can’t beat me.”  (i.e., can’t stroke me.)   I am truly impressed and humbled by this writer — those are some titillating,  suggestive captions!

The blue language goes on and on:  Valentine “began to pound Piper harder and harder.  But Valentine’s blows didn’t seem to penetrate the Scotsman.”  I didn’t invent or fake these captions, by the way.

I think I need a cigarette.  Anyway, moving on.  As we’ve mentioned, a pro wrestling feud often contains a homo-erotic subtext — a passionate attraction between the two men.  They take an unnatural, blood-thirsty interest in each other, begin stalking the enemy, inflicting pain upon and dominating the other man, trying to force his surrender.  They make erotic comments in their interviews, such as “Do you want a piece of me, big man?“, and “We’re going to get it on in Dallas“, and “I’m gonna hurt you, boy.”  Men don’t usually obsess like this, unless it’s an obsession over an object of lust.

The addition of the chain in this match adds an even more evident sexual energy.  They are playing around with leather collars and a steel chain — a reference to S & M games.  They are wearing the sort of fetish equipment you might find in some freak’s dungeon.

As if a shirtless guy wearing a leather dog collar isn’t stimulating enough, the chain also causes the two men to be literally joined together, inseparable.  They are coupled, unable to move apart because they are bound together.  If one man tries to get away, the other can yank him close again like a fish on a hook.  The chain is the physical representation of a relationship, or marriage, or a fatal attraction.  They are helplessly, hopelessly locked to each other, their fates interwoven.

And if you happen to be into violence, a chain match always provides plenty of that — choking, whipping, bondage, blood, etc.  In this match, Piper and Valentine also forced the chain into each other’s mouths like a harness several times, and rubbed it back and forth across the other man’s eyes to blind him.  Ouch!

Piper had suffered an ear injury in an earlier battle, and Valentine (the ideal heel) attacks his weakness.  He strikes the side of Piper’s head with the chain, causing blood to flow.  Piper plays up the dizziness, as if his ear trauma destroyed his equilibrium.  He falls around like a drunken man.

This brilliant act of stumbling helplessness by Piper adds an element of woeful vulnerability, an inability to defend himself as Valentine keeps up the pressure.  You just don’t see ring psychology that tells a story like that very often.
