Match Watch: The New Face

Match: Jared Wayne of the Pump Patrol vs. Martin Casaus

Federation: Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling TV, Episode 005

Gimmicks: Flexing Show-Off, The New Guy Effect, Making A Face

Gear Pat-Down: As a member of the muscular “Pump Patrol” tag team, Jared Wayne is obsessed with working out.  So he wears a sweat-band and brings exercise ropes to the ring. His bright red trunks with silver lettering are meant to draw attention.

But Martin Casaus, holy hunk, in abbreviated green speedos with white accents.  Wow!

You may recall Casaus from the Tough Enough series on MTV, the reality show where they trained rookies to wrestle in the WWE.  He was the handsome young favorite expected to win the competition until he injured his ankle and had to go home.  So they had to let some other guy win, and nobody has seen or heard from that dude again.

But Casaus has continued to wrestle in the UCW Zero federation which he partly owns and in other Indy promotions.  This is his debut match for Reality of Wrestling, the federation of former Tough Enough trainer, Booker T.  Martin is wearing the stretchiest of little green trunks, stretched to their absolute limit over his bulky frame.

What to Watch For:

  • Powerful physiques on both opponents (especially Casaus, damn!)
  • Great suffering by Casaus, whose facial expressions say:  OUCH, I’m surprised how bad that hurt! (I could’ve used about 10 more minutes of this.)
  • Have I mentioned Martin’s green trunks?

Hottest Moves:

  • Flexing Chinlock into Forward Roll @ 21:11
  • Fireman’s Carry into Diamond Cutter (AKA the Perfector) @ 22:02

Psychology 101:

This match is designed to establish Casaus as the new lovable Baby Face of the federation.

The Reality of Wrestling promotion recently announced a network television deal that will broadcast their show to millions of homes.  To get and keep a television audience, you need a Hero, especially a really handsome, buff Hero.  Thus Casaus.

So first Jared Wayne is established as a credible and dangerous adversary.  He flexes his big arms, he attacks Casaus from behind, he generally kicks and stomps the new guy for several minutes.  And Casuas sells it so beautifully.

After we clearly see that Wayne is a Big Bad Wolf, then Casaus overcomes this challenge and wins the match — our Hero!  Our hearts grow three sizes when we see Casaus in victory and celebrating his win standing on the ropes like a Superhero.  This match is brief (and so are Martin’s trunks) but it does the job of introducing the new Face and leaving us eager to see more of him.
