Double-Team Definition

I was watching the movie “Old School” recently, and one of the characters made an interesting comment about his promiscuous girlfriend:

“True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a goddamn magic show ready to double team your girlfriend…”

It was the phrase “double team” that caught my ear, meaning that the two intruders were going to have simultaneous sex with the man’s girlfriend.

This had me thinking about the pro wrestling version of double-teaming, meaning for two members of a Tag Team to attack their victim simultaneously.

The two meanings of the term “double team” have some interesting similarities…

Both the sexual double-team and the wrestling double-team are considered dirty or inappropriate — it is seen as illegal or perverse for two men to engage in the activity.

In both sexual double-teaming and wrestling double-teaming, the lone victim gets screwed, used and abused by the two dominant partners. Both forms of double-teaming are an opportunity for the two partners to bond, to strengthen their homo-social relationship to each other.  As discussed in an earlier article, men who play sports together (including wrestling) are bonding, and men involved in a traditional love triangle are secretly attracted to the other man in the triangle, not the female.

Also implicit in double-teaming is the concept that the third party — the one getting double-teamed — is accepting.  In pro wrestling, we understand it’s all part of the show and the victim is working with his two abusers to tell a good story in the ring.  In sexual double-teaming, the recipient of the double-team is portrayed as very eager to feel the effects of not one, but two, partners providing pleasure at the same time.

In both forms of double-teaming, the third party is overwhelmed (with either pleasure or pain.)  With six arms and six legs in the mix, both forms of double-teaming enable more creative positions and body placements.

The similarities are even more obvious when the wrestler is placed in a suggestive position: his legs spread wide apart, his body straddled or bent over.

At these moments, the announcers will allude to “double-teaming” in order to evoke thoughts of the seedier meaning of the term.
